Arthur T. Williams, Sr., born January 15, 1921 in Southampton, NY, the son of Harry and Lilian Williams, referenced by many as Tom, but to family members as Pop or Uncle Tom. He was affectionately known as “Rat” to those closest to him. Tom spent his earlier years on the Shinnecock grounds where he attended school in the Southampton schools before joining the US Armed forces where he was stationed in New Guinea between 1942 to 1946 during World WarII. After honorably serving this Nation, Tom returned to Shinnecock. Shortly after his return,  he married the late Dorothy Dent-Williams in June of 1948. Together Tom and Dot had two children; a son Arthur, Jr. and a daughter Deyanne. Hile residing in Cambria Heights, Queens, Tom worked for the NYC Transit in 1970 before transitioning to the Wall Street area where he worked at Chase Manhattan Bank. He would retire from a successful career from Chase in 1981. After retiring, Tom and Dot moved back home to the Shinnecock Nation.

Arthur Thomas Williams, Sr. focused on empowering the Nation. He has served as an elected Tribal Trustee. He took his passions-golf, traveling and love of the Shinnecock Nation, and shared them with his Tribal family. As an avid golfer, playing every opportunity and winning many trophies throughout his travels, it was a natural transition to becoming a founding member of the Shinnecock Golfers Association Scholarship Fund, Inc. This organization exists currently and supports elders, those in need, and students as they advance towards their educational goals. Tom could often be seen spending quality time with the Shinnecock youth in the first summer camp, which he also helped found. Fond memories include seeing him with a cluster of children packed into the back of his truck as they headed out for the day’s great adventure. And of course, he would instill his love of golf in the youth by teaching them this sport. On rainy days, with a goal of increasing exposure to the world beyond the “stony shores” of Shinnecock, he would gather the children in the Center and show home movies of his vacations to many places: 18 states, the Caribbean islands, and Hawaii-TWICE!

Arthur T. Williams, Sr., is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Dent Williams, and his son, Arthur T. Williams, Jr. He is survived by his daughter Deyanne of the Shinnecock Nation; and his grandchildren: Naiche, Nakia, Linee, Nicole, Nayovawan and Shakota. He has 20 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Donald Williams, Sr., brother-in-law, Harold Dent; and, sisters-in-law: Joanne Dent, Joan Williams and Mildred O’sorio. He leaves a host of relatives, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Suffice it to say, Arthur Thomas Williams, Sr., was a much loved, well respected, passionate and devoted leader. He will be greatly missed.
