James J. McEntee, 72, passed away on Friday Februray 15th at his home in Southampton NY surrounded by his family. Mr. McEntee, was one of four children born in Brooklyn, NY, to first-generation Irish Catholic parents, Patrick and Rose McEntee. He attended Catholic school in Brooklyn and after graduating, went on to Fordham University.
Jim’s career began at an early age. While still at Fordham he worked in the back office of Chase bank and at the age of 23 became one of the founding partners of Carroll, McEntee & McGinley. McEntee’s fierce bond trading style was pivotal to the success of CM&M. His Irish ancestry was well known and his annual St.Patrick’s Day parties were a coveted event. After serving as Chairman of the Board and Co-CEO of CM&M, the company was sold to one of the largest banks in the world and Jim “retired” to form his own investment firm, McEntee & Associates.
In both his private and professional lives, Jim has always been committed to philanthropy, with a special interest in underprivileged children. He and his wife Barbara founded the annual Southampton Fresh Air Home fireworks picnic which they hosted at their home for many years. He served as a Director of Catholic Big Brothers and served on the board of the Southampton Hospital.
Jim had a special affection for Southampton and called it home for over 40 years. He loved to travel, ski, play tennis, golf and swim in the ocean. He is survived by his wife, Barbara A McEntee and his children, Kathryn and her husband James, Conor, James Jr and his wife Sophie and his grandchildren, Theia and River.
Services will be held at O’Connell Funeral Home on Friday, February 22nd, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Mass will be held on Saturday, February 23rd, at the Basilica of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary at 10am in Southampton.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Southampton Fresh Air Home, 36 Barkers Island Road, Southampton NY 11968, (631) 283-5847 - would be greatly appreciated.
