Laura Elizabeth Griffin, whom almost everyone simply called La, died peacefully at the Hamptons Care Center, surrounded by her immediate family, on May 12th. She was 94 years old and had lived a long, dignified, and full life.
Born in Canada, Laura and her sister, along with her parents, navigated the Great Depression by moving to Hamilton, Ontario. La owned a florist shop in Canada for seven years before moving to Valhalla, New York, to be closer to her sister and her family.
Laura became a US citizen in 1958 and embarked on a long and successful career as a Trust Officer for the Bank of New York. Upon retiring from the bank, she moved to Asheville, North Carolina and spent thirteen happy years under skies of "Carolina blue." While there, she volunteered as a Big Sister, became a Guardian Ad Litem for disadvantaged children, qualified as a Master Gardener, and enjoyed the company of her many Carolina friends.
In 1997, Laura returned to Sag Harbor to be closer to her remaining family. She volunteered at the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum and became a valued member of the Center for Creative Retirement at the former Southampton College. In her quiet hours she enjoyed sketching , painting, handicrafts, and gardening.
Laura is survived by two nieces, Claire Lyons of Greenport and Laura Lyons of Southampton, four great nieces and two great-great nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at the O'Connell Funeral Home in Southampton at 11am , Saturday, May 19th. Laura's wishes were to be cremated and she will be interred at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.
