Biography

Born:  July 5, 1919
Died:  February 15, 2017
Age:   97

Virginia Rodríguez Rios, 97, of Oil City, passed away peacefully on February 15.  Her family finds comfort knowing that she is now resting comfortably with her daughter and husband in heaven, and most of all, that she is now with her Heavenly Father.

Born July 5, 1919, in New York City, Virginia was the daughter of the late Brunilda (Vasquéz) Rodriguez and the late Jose Rodríguez.

Virginia was married for nearly 50 years to the late Virgil Rios before he passed away.  They raised their children in New York, and moved to Oil City in the late 70s where their daughter, son, and grandchildren at the time were residing.  Virginia called Oil City her home for nearly 40 years.

Virginia was bilingual in Spanish and quite artistic.  Her hobbies included still life painting, sewing, crocheting, gardening and walking.  She was a member of the Oil City YWCA for many years and enjoyed exercise, long before it became a fad.  When she lost her vision due to macular degeneration, she became active with the Association of the Blind.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, and daughter, Brunhilde (Bunny) Emmolo.  She is survived by her sons Virgil Rios and his wife Barbara of New York, Richard Rios and his wife Marla of Indiana, her son-in-law Dr. Alfonse A. Emmolo of New York, and her daughter-in-law Brandy Rios; her grandchildren Andrea (Emmolo) Madaio, Angela Rios, Lauren (Emmolo) McGrath, Richard Rios, Michelle (Rios) Sturdivant, Alfonse Emmolo, Christopher Emmolo, Francesca Rios, Bradly Breedlove and Brett Breedlove; and her 11 great grandchildren.  She was also preceded in death by her siblings Josephine (Rodríguez) Segura, George Rodríguez, and Hernán (Jimmy) Rodríguez.  She is survived by her siblings Frieda (Rodríguez) Matos, Richard Rodríguez and Joseph Rodríguez.

For the past two years, Virginia lived in Southampton, New York, to be near family.  A visitation and funeral mass are being held in New York.  A private burial will take place on Wednesday, February 22, at Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens in Cranberry.  Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).  Condolences may be left online at oconnellfunerals.com.
