He was born to Dorothy and Arnold New on November 25th, 1930 in New York City later moving to Stewart Manor and then Freeport, New York.
Richard ran track at Freeport High School and at seventeen he joined the United States Navy.
While in the navy, he enrolled in radio school, worked in communications and did some boxing.
In 1953 he married Gloria Borkowski and had three daughters. He worked for the Long Island Lighting Company and after 40 years, he retired from the Bridgehampton office.
In his younger days, Richard bred and trained English Setter dogs for Field Trials. Later on, he became an avid sailor. In his retirement he obtained his captain's license and spent many days sailing the Peconic Bay. His love for the outdoors often had him tending his vegetable garden and maintaining his Watermill resistance. In the winter he resided in Naples, Florida where he sailed and played baseball with an " over 60" league.
Richard was a member of the Community Bible Church in Sag Harbor and the Naples Alliance Church in Florida.
He is survived by his wife Gloria, of 62 years; a sister, Kathleen Kerr; three daughters, Karen Tureski and her husband Tom, Michelle New, Diane New and her partner Alec Chang; four grandchildren, Michael Tureski and his wife Stacey, Dana Distefano and her husband Chris, Mark Tureski and his wife Eileen, Stephen Tureski and his wife Kelly and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held for the family and friends at the Community Bible Church, 2837 Noyac Road, Sag Harbor, New York on March 5th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Breakwater Yacht Club/Junior Sailing Program, P.O. Box 2601, Sag Harbor 11963 or Community Bible Church/ Youth Group, at the address above.
