Garald (Dean) Pinkston of Southampton died on May 19 peacefully in his home. He was 75.
A graduate of Calhoun High School in Calhoun, MO, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1958 and served in the tank corps for many years. Upon meeting his future wife while both were camping with their parents at Bennett Springs State Park in Missouri, he moved to St. Louis to woo her into marriage in 1966.
He worked as an engineer for Southwestern Bell Telephone from 1965 until his retirement. He was well known throughout Southern Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas for his careful and precise drafting work. After his retirement, he and his wife of 47 years, Diane, opened an antique lamp store named Lights Your Way in Springfield, MO.
A joyful and gregarious man, Dean enjoyed entertaining in his home, meeting new people and catching up with old friends, playing with his two granddaughters, attending church, fishing, and working in his vegetable garden.
In 2005, he and Diane moved to Southampton to be closer to their daughter, Wendy, and her family. They were fortunate to spend many summers together at the beach. Here in Southampton, he continued his antique lamp repair business and fixed many of the lamps in the Southampton Historical Society, where he served on the collector’s committee.
He was a member of the Masonic Temple in Ash Grove, MO and Southampton, NY. He was also a parishioner at the First Presbyterian Church in Southampton.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Pinkston of Southampton; his daughter, Wendy Cebula and son-in-law, Vince Cebula, both of Manhattan; his sister, Beulah Bradley of Clinton, MO; several nieces and nephews in Central Missouri; and two granddaughters, Naomi and Charlotte Cebula of Manhattan.
