DONOGHUE, HELEN RACHEL
Former resident of Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey passed away peacefully in Florida on April 14, 2011. Born April 19, 1934 the daughter of Margaret and James Donoghue of the Bronx, New York, she was a graduate of St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School, and served the Dominican Community of Blauvelt, as Sister Mary Benita. She retired from the New York Telephone Company after many years of faithful service. Proud of her Scottish heritage she was a member of St. Margaret of Scotland Guild in the Bronx and helped raise funds to support a church of the same name on Long Island. Her youngest sister Catherine O’Donoghue Hartman of Denmark, Maine and her sisters-in-law; Eileen Donoghue of Spring Lake, New Jersey, and Marylou Donoghue of Sea Girt, New Jersey, survive her. She was cared for with great love and compassion by her devoted niece Mary Dohan formerly of New Jersey, now residing in The Villages, Florida. Helen leaves behind many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly and all mourn her passing. She was predeceased by her siblings; Sarah Roberts, Dennis Donoghue, James Donoghue, Margaret McQuade, and Alexander Donoghue.
Helen was the first woman to walk across the lower span of the Verazano Narrows Bridge and proudly displayed her medal for such historic achievement. She enjoyed singing and dancing; and it is a great blessing that she will be laid to rest alongside her parents at St. Raymond Cemetery on her 77th birthday allowing heaven to celebrate a reuniting with those she loved and missed so much.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 18th from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Marinello Funeral Home, 493 Middle Country Road in Coram, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 19th at 9:45 AM at St. Margarets of Scotland RC Church in Selden, NY. Interment will follow at St. Raymonds Cemetery in the Bronx, NY.
