Meredith Platt Joyce Obituary

Meredith Joan Platt Joyce (Mary Jo)

Meredith Joan Platt Joyce of Southampton and formerly of Flushing, New York, died on March 7, 2020, in Silver Spring, Maryland, surrounded by her loving family, while in hospice care. She was 82.

Ms. Joyce was born on June 12, 1937, in Southampton at Southampton Hospital, to parents William Bangs Platt, Jr and Edith Margaret Guldi Platt.  On November 29, 1958, she married her beloved husband Thomas Walter Eeves Joyce, Jr., whom she originally met in early childhood, as her father (a graduate of Georgetown Law) and his father, Thomas Walter Eeves Joyce (a graduate of the Fordham University School of Law), became close friends while at Georgetown University.  She graduated from Good Counsel College and received her Masters degree in Education from CW Post.  Her career began as an Educator and finished as an Antique Shop Proprietor.

Ms. Joyce founded and managed Another Time Antiques shop in the Village of Southampton for over 25 years, and was joined by Tom upon his retirement.  Ms. Joyce was a devout Catholic and long-time parishioner of the Basilica Church of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary where she was married, and her mother, Edith Guldi Platt, played the organ for more than 40 years.

In 2014, Mary Jo and Tom moved to the Riderwood Retirement Community in Silver Spring, Maryland, where they were also members of the Church of the Resurrection, but she always looked forward to being back in Southampton enjoying the sunshine. Ms. Joyce was predeceased by her loving husband of 59 and a half years, Thomas Joyce on July 6, 2018; and her brother, William Platt III on November 20, 2011.  She is survived by her sister, Emalie Feerick of Larchmont, New York; her bother, Harold Platt of Naples, Florida; her brother, Jonathan Platt of Hampton Bays, New York; her sister, Elinor Hoar of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and her brother, Richard Platt of Marlborough, Massachusetts; her daughter, Catherine Joyce Gates and husband, Bret of Kensington, Maryland; her son, Thomas W.E. Joyce III and wife Lori of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; and four grandchildren, Kevin Gates of Gainesville, Florida, Ryan Joyce and wife Melissa Butler of Williamsburg, Virginia, Brendan Gates and wife, Christie of Chapin, South Carolina, and Kayla Joyce and her fiancé Ryan Karzar of Bowie, Maryland.
