Remembering Marion Joyce Turner Darden

Marion was born in Southampton, New York on October 6, 1929, to Gordon and Dona Turner.  She was one of five siblings.

Marion was raised in East Hampton, New York where she attended East Hampton public schools.  At a very young age, she gave her life to Christ at the St. Luke Episcopal Church in East Hampton.

In 1944, she married the late Harding Drew Darden Sr. and from that union, five children were born.

She later joined the First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton where she was very active with the Usher Board and as the Church Clerk.  In the community, Marion was a lifetime member of the NAACP.

Marion worked at the Rowe Industry for five years. Later, she served many families with joy assisting them with beautifying their homes, dog sitting and other household tasks.

Marion loved her family, neighbors and friends. She loved to cook for her family, and she did it well, especially the family favorite “cheese” dish.  She was an avid reader of the newspapers, magazines and books.  Marion was a very sociable, outgoing and loving individual who never met a stranger.

When she transitioned to the Hampton Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, she exuded that same personality with the staff and residents.  When family members visited, she would say, “this is my family,” which she announced proudly to everyone she met in the hallway.

Marion was predeceased by:  Husband-Harding Darden Sr; sons-Harding Darden Jr. and James Briggs Darden, siblings:  Everett Turner, Gordon Turner Jr., Helen Pearson and Hillard Turner.

Marion is survived by her children:  Ronald (Patty) of Pennsylvania; John Darden of Wisconsin; Gordon (Denise) of Tennessee; daughter-in-law, Rev. Annie Darden of Maryland; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Turner of Virginia; Seven grandchildren:  Michael, John Jr, Cynthia, Eric, Kimberly, Shaniekqua, and Karen; 11 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marion’s favorite quote: “God’s has been good to me.”
