Marianne Zita Nugent

Marianne Nugent of Southampton passed away at home on December 13, less than two months shy of her 98th birthday. She was born on February 3, 1925 in Manhattan to James A McCarthy and Gertrude Casey McCarthy. Mrs. Nugent attended high school at St. Catharine’s Academy in New York City before receiving her undergraduate degree from Marymount College, where she was President of her Class of 1947. She then went on to receive a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Teachers College. Mrs. Nugent spent her career at Columbia University, retiring from her last position in 1993 after 17 years as the Manager of Butler Hall, a graduate student and faculty residence on Morningside Drive.

Mrs. Nugent and her husband, Jim, first arrived in Southampton in 1972, spending summers and weekends on the East End before becoming fulltime residents in retirement. Mrs. Nugent served for many years as a Eucharistic Minister at the Basilica Parish of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. She and her husband were longtime members of the Watermill Beach Club. Among Mrs. Nugent’s greatest joys in life were her grandchildren, her golden retrievers, and her gardens.

Mrs. Nugent was a loving wife to James G. (pre-deceased), to whom she was married for 73 years. She was a devoted mother to James G. Nugent Jr (pre-deceased), Marianne Turner and John G. Nugent, as well as four grandchildren: Ashley Turner Crawford, Jim Turner, Isabella Nugent and John Nugent III.

A funeral mass was held in Southampton on Wednesday, December 21 at the Basilica Parish of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton, followed by internment at Sacred Hearts RC Cemetery.
