Bernadette A. Burns, age 92 of Southampton, passed away on December 20, 2023. Berney was one of five children born and raised in Brighton, MA, by Bill and Mary O’Kane. She is the last of her family as Berney’s siblings (Bill O’Kane, Mary (Sis) Connelly, Fran O’Kane and Walter O’Kane) have all predeceased her, as did her beloved husband Dan (1996).
She met and married Dan in Brighton and they subsequently moved to Long Island in the late 1950’s. They settled into Southampton in 1966 where they raised their family of six girls: Bernadette Sullivan (Dan), Denise Burns (Gary daCunha), Darlene White (James), Danielle Burns (David Strough, deceased), Dawn Stelling (Robert, deceased) and Dina Ronk (Joel). She loved them all dearly and Berney continued to play a large part in their lives through the very end.
Berney loved to “pahty” and her antics have touched many throughout her life. Berney also loved to play Whist during family gatherings and in the course of those, she provided a number of witticisms over the years. In fact, so many, that the daughters actually memorialized the Top Ten on a basement wall. Berney never disappointed at those gatherings and the Top Ten soon expanded to be the Top Twenty, then Thirty, etc. The continued sharing of those memories will contribute to her legacy of love and gab going forward.
In addition to her daughters, Berney’s Irish eyes will continue to shine upon her grandchildren: Jennifer, Jamie and Jimmy White; Devin, Dylan and Brenna Sullivan; Shawn, Ryan and Summer Stelling; and Tyler and Kyle Ronk. Berney was also blessed to be great grandmother for Jaxson and Savannah Combs and Madison, Jay and Nico White. Berney’s extended family includes a number of nieces and nephews who will also miss her dearly.
Please join us if you are able as we celebrate Berney’s life. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 27, from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM, at O'Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home, located at 30 Little Plains Road, Southampton NY. A Mass of Chrisitan Burial will follow at 11:30 AM at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Southampton NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family humbly requests that donations might be made to the East End Hospice, Southampton, NY.
