Ann Hopwood Obituary

Ann M. Hopwood (NEE Rowland) 75 of Southampton, NY and Garden City, NY passed away Monday October 17th, 2022.

Ann grew up in the Bronx, NY with her parents and three sisters and as a family they spent their summers in North Sea Beach Colony “NSBC” in Southampton, NY.   Ann and her husband Marty (Martin) met through mutual family friends one summer out in NSBC.  They were married soon after meeting and spent their time between Garden City and Southampton with their children.  Ann was very proud of her work and family.  She went back to school later in life and excelled at Malloy College (graduating magna cum laude) and Fordham University where she got her master’s degree in social work, all while raising her 3 children.  She dedicated her career as a social worker for a foster care agency, St. Mary’s in Syosset, NY, where she was supporting young children in need at any hour of the day.  She was proud of the educational and professional career she built and often lent her social worker skills to close family and friends when they needed someone to talk to.  Ann was always there to talk, listen and offer the best support and advice.  She was proud of the family she and Marty raised and built together.  Her proudest moments were seeing her children be successful in life and work- which they wouldn’t have been able to do without her guidance, love, and support.

Ann is survived by her Husband of 41 years, Martin M. Hopwood Jr.  She was the mother of Brian Rowland Hopwood of Massapequa NY, who is married to Cecilia Hopwood.  John Joseph Hopwood of New York, NY, who is married to Claudia Hopwood.  Kristin Ann Bennett of Norwell, MA, who is married to Jarret Bennett.

Ann was the grandmother (“Grammy”) of Jack Martin Hopwood, Drew Rowland Hopwood, Maeve Ann Bennett, Sloane Rowland Bennett and Tommy Vail Hopwood.

She was the loving sister of Helen O’Keefe of West Palm Beach, FL and Patricia Browne of Dacula, GA.  She is predeceased by her sister Mary Troy of Floral Park, NY.

Ann loved spending time in Southampton “The Country” with Marty, her children and grandchildren.  They spent their time together swimming in the bay or taking walks around the colony and always enjoyed a Carvel ice cream cake on special occasions.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed sitting outside reading in the sun.  She was known as the lady with the big white dog when they lived in Garden City as she was often spotted taking long walks with her Samoyeds.  Throughout her life she enjoyed and threw many celebrations for her family and friends including memorable GC football parties, countless holidays, graduations, birthdays, showers, weddings and more.

The Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Poland in Southampton, NY on Saturday October 22nd at 1:00pm.
